Orthopedic Considerations:
The wrist and the hand represent a functional unit. Hand function is one of the most complex and versatile of all skeletal structures of the human body. The wrist joint enhances the function of the hand.

Etiology:
Hand injuries may range from minor trauma, to severe deformities and dysfunction and occur due to excessive use throughout our daily life and challenging work, artistic, sports, gymnastic activities and as a result of accident and injuries. The most common injuries at the wrist and hand are carpal tunnel syndrome, repetitive stress syndrome, fractures, sprains, tendonitis, tendosynovitis, etc. See full list below .
Signs and Symptoms of wrist or hand problems: pain, numbness and weakness are related to nerve injury, while joints swelling and stiffness are related to inflammation, or trauma.
The Danger of Permanent Disability:
Injury may traumatize the wrist or hand. In addition to the aforementioned, trauma results in muscle imbalance and accelerated, so-called traumatic arthritis. Traumatic arthritis causes deformity, stiffness, misalignment, chronic pain and loss of function. To prevent disability, it is critical to receive early diagnosis and treatment, usually physical therapy.
· Fractures (Traumatic or Stress)
· Strains/Sprains
· Tendonitis)
· Tendosynovitis at the Wrist
· De Quervain Syndrome
· Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
· Repetitive Stress Syndrome
· Osteoarthritis (Degenerative Arthritis)
· Rheumatoid Arthritis
· Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD)
· Pinched Nerves
· Trigger Finger
· Strain at the Hook of the Hamate
· Navicular Syndrome
· Wrist Effusion (Swelling due to Trauma or Inflammation
· Sensory loss, Numbness
· Muscle Atrophy
Diagnostic Considerations:
Before treatment options are contemplated, a thorough differential diagnostic evaluation and assessment is necessary. The evaluation of the wrist and hand may necessitate x-ray studies and other tests, such as an MRI scan, or diagnostic ultrasound. In addition, an EMG (electromyography) may be necessary.
Conservative Treatment or Surgery
Most wrist or hand problems respond positively to conservative, non-operative treatment.
After the diagnosis is established, an individualized treatment plan is designed to maximize healing. Patients may receive physical therapy in our state-of-the-art physical therapy facility. The facility is outfitted with the best equipment, that today physical rehabilitation can offer.
