Tendonitis, Tendon Strain, Tendon Tear

Tendonitis is a very common condition in orthopedic practice. It may occur in both the upper and lower extremities. Tendonitis results from chronic repetitive strain, or from a sudden force or impact. It is an inflammation of both the tendon and the site of tendon attachment. The condition is frequently chronic, painful and interferes with normal muscle function and movement.

Mechanism of injury, Muscle Tension, Muscle Tone,

Muscles are elastic and contractile, tendons are tough and resisting to stretch. Muscle is characterized by muscle tone, and muscle strength. Muscle tone depends on muscle resistance to stretch. Muscle tone is a function of an individual's constitution, personality, age, emotions, level of stress and irritability of the nervous system at a given time.

Repetitive muscle strain and excessive force result in increased muscle tension, impaired muscle efficiency, due to abnormal muscle tone, increased resistance to muscle action, both contraction and relaxation, causing tendon strain and inflammation, called tendonitis. Tendonitis typically results in tear of tendon fibers.

Tendon Inflammation, Periosteal Detachment,

Tendons attach to bones through the periosteum. The periosteum is a tough membrane that adheres to bones like a glove. Strain can weaken the tendon attachment causing periosteal inflammation and subperiosteal fluid collection or "bubble." By mechanical action, the subperiosteal bubble causes periosteal detachment.

Physical Therapy, Balanced Exercises, Chronic Dysfunction, Disability

The process may lead to a vicious cycle, since further strain will increase the size of the bubble and therefore the detachment. Due to rich nerve supply the inflamed and especially the detached periosteum is extremely painful upon movements. The condition is similar to a tree being uprooted. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical to avoid chronic dysfunction or permanent disability. Treatment consists of physical therapy, medications, judicious rest and a balanced exercise regimen.

If you are suffering of tendonitis do not hesitate to seek timely, professional help.
