Conditions We Diagnose And Treat: HIP INJURIES

Hip

Orthopedic Considerations:

The predominant function of the hip is weight bearing and locomotion. The hip has excellent mobility, while retaining good stability, that is provided by strong ligaments and musculature.
Despite lifelong and constant wear and tear, the hip maintains its relative structural and functional integrity.

Etiology and Pathology:

Weight bearing makes the hip susceptible to a variety of injuries: daily life activities, stairs climbing, sports and entertainment activities, occupational injuries, falling, motor vehicle and other accidents. Osteoporosis, is a strong predisposition for fractures. The most common injuries of hip are fracture, tendon and ligament strain, bursitis, joint contracture, arthritis, capsulitis, etc. See full list below .

Symptoms and signs of hip injuries include: pain on weight bearing, standing and walking. Additional symptoms may be swelling and impaired mobility. Nerve injuries and soft tissue strain may result in muscle weakness and sensory abnormalities.

The Danger of Permanent Disability:

Injury may traumatize the hip. In addition to the aforementioned, trauma results in muscle imbalance, abnormal weight distribution and accelerated, so-called traumatic arthritis. Traumatic arthritis causes deformity, stiffness, misalignment, chronic pain and loss of function. To prevent disability, it is critical to receive early diagnosis and treatment, usually physical therapy.

Diagnostic Considerations:

Before treatment options are contemplated, a thorough differential diagnostic evaluation and assessment is necessary. The evaluation of the hip frequently necessitates x-ray studies and other tests such as an MRI scan or diagnostic ultrasound.

Conservative Treatment or Surgery

Most hip problems respond positively to conservative, non-operative treatment.

After the diagnosis is established, an individualized treatment plan is designed to maximize healing. Patients may receive physical therapy in our state-of-the-art physical therapy facility. The facility is outfitted with the best equipment, that today physical rehabilitation can offer.
