Cardiovascular or conditioning exercises consist of light, repetitive movements. They are carried out by the upper or lower extremities, or both. Walking, jogging , running, dancing, climbing, swimming are examples of this category of exercises.
Training Effect
The main training effect of conditioning or endurance exercises is improved stamina and vigor, i.e. the ability of an individual to endure or maintain a physical activity for an extended period of time without rest and fatigue.
The physiological basis for metabolic improvement
The improved endurance is imparted both to skeletal and heart muscles. Successful training improves muscle metabolism, enabling muscles to store sufficient amount of immediately available energy source, and utilize it more efficiently. As previously mentioned, improved muscle metabolism results in exercises that can last longer without rest and fatigue. At extreme circumstances one may have an improved ability for "fight" obviating the need for "flight".
In addition to the main training effect of improved stamina, other physical benefits are improved circulation, more efficient heart function, higher level of base metabolism, increased fat burning with weight loss, lower blood cholesterol, improved glucose tolerance, generally improved metabolism, etc.
