Bursitis

Bursitis is a very common condition in orthopedic practice, occurring in both the upper and lower extremities, around the shoulders, elbows, hips or knees and the foot. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical to avoid a severe chronic pain syndrome with disability.

Mechanism of action

A bursa is a fluid filled sack positioned around joints, functioning as a cushion to protect soft tissues from friction, caused by tight tendons during muscle contraction. When muscles are relaxed, tendons are slack. Upon muscle contraction the tendons become taut and sharp like a cable. They can cut into underlying soft tissues. Strenuous exercises frequently irritate and inflame the bursa.

Injury of Baseball Pitchers, Tennis Players, Weight Lifters, and the Weekend Athlete

Bursitis can occur around the shoulders, knees, hips and other joints. Baseball pitchers or tennis players frequently develop shoulder bursitis. Runners and weight lifters are susceptible to hip or knee bursitis. The weekend athlete and the novice sports enthusiast are particularly at high risk.

Intense exercises cause a defense mechanism to deposit calcium salt crystals in the bursa, rendering it thicker, harder and more resistant to pressure and tension. During exercise, the salt crystals are rubbing like sand against the surrounding soft tissue, resulting in painful inflammation, (bursitis) that hinders normal movements.

Physical Therapy, Ultrasound, Judicious Exercises

Treatment is conservative, including physical therapy. Ultrasound may dissolve the salt crystals. Neuromuscular reeducation with positive reinforcement and judicious exercises are utilized beneficially.

If you are suffering of bursitis do not hesitate to seek timely, professional help.
