Conditions We Diagnose And Treat: ANKLE AND FOOT INJURIES:

Orthopedic Considerations:

The foot has many injuries during life. During stance and locomotion the foot bears the weight of the body and instantly accommodates to varying types of terrain. Weight bearing is provided by the arch of the foot. Injury or trauma, excessive wear and tear, weak foot and leg musculature, flattening of the arch all result in foot deformities.

Etiology:

Constant life long weight bearing makes the ankle and foot susceptible to a variety of injuries. They are caused by our daily life activities, sports and arts activities (running, dancing), occupational injuries, falling, motor vehicle and other accidents.

Symptoms and signs of foot or ankle problems include: pain, in weight bearing: standing and walking. Injuries cause inflammation and swelling. Nerve damage results in muscle weakness and impaired sensation. Muscle imbalance or weakness in the foot is more commonly the cause, than the consequence. Foot problems need early intervention, to prevent long term deformities and disabilities.

The Danger of Permanent Disability:

Injury may traumatize the ankle and foot. In addition to the aforementioned, trauma results in muscle imbalance, abnormal weight distribution and accelerated, so-called traumatic arthritis. Traumatic arthritis causes deformity, stiffness, misalignment, chronic pain and loss of function. To prevent disability, it is critical to receive early diagnosis and treatment, usually physical therapy.

Ankle / Foot Injuries and Conditions in Orthopedic Practice:

· Ankle Pain, Swelling

· Fractures

· Ankle Sprain

· Calcaneofibular or Deltoid Ligament Strain

· Achilles Tendon Strain

· Heel Spur

· Plantar Fasciitis

· Metatarsalgia

· Compartment Syndrome

· Shin Splints

· Entrapment Syndromes

· Restless Leg Syndrome

· Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

· Morton's Neuroma

· Ligament Laxity

Diagnostic Considerations:

Before treatment options are contemplated, a thorough differential diagnostic evaluation and assessment is necessary. The evaluation of the foot and ankle frequently necessitates x-ray studies and other tests, such as an MRI scan, or diagnostic ultrasound.

Conservative Treatment or Surgery ?

Most ankle and foot problems respond positively to conservative, non-operative treatment. After the diagnosis is established, an individualized treatment plan is designed to maximize healing. Patients may receive physical therapy in our state-of-the-art physical therapy facility. The facility is outfitted with the best equipment, that today physical rehabilitation can offer.
