About Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is a treatment method for musculoskeletal injuries and disabilities.  It consists of different principles, modalities and procedures.

Generally, physical injuries occur by accidents. They cause structural damage to the body, resulting in tissue break down and dysfunction.

The body's response to injury is inflammation, tissue repair, regeneration and scar tissue formation. Physical therapy promotes tissue healing and helps to restore pain free, functional movement.

The main principles of physical therapy are positive reinforcement and neuromuscular reeducation. Reeducation is based on learning and learning is based on practice and repetition.

Physical therapy must be repeated at regular intervals to allow the body to learn and practice newly acqired functions or relearn ones, that were lost or damaged.   Practice or repetition of a proper movement is a positive change that results in tissue healing and functional improvement.  This is called positive reinforcement.

It cannot be emphasized enough, that early physical rehabilitation is critical to prevent an injury to become chronic.  Conditions, that are left untreated, or insufficiently treated, tend to become chronic and may result in functional loss, physical deformities and permanent disabilities.

Patient Education Sessions:

Once we established the diagnosis, we provide our patients with a detailed treatment plan, including therapy prescription.  Patients receive instructions and education how to improve their body mechanics, posture, gait, work ergonomics, position of sleep, etc.  They are taught injury prevention techniques as well.

If you are suffering of an orthopedic condition, physical therapy may be helpful to you.
